Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions below
What is the difference between HiPP German, HiPP Dutch, and HiPP UK?
While all three follow strict EU organic standards, the primary differences are in starch and probiotics. HiPP German: The most variety; contains both prebiotics and probiotics. Most stages (except PRE) contain mild organic starch for satiety. HiPP Dutch: Comes in a convenient 800g tin. Like the German version, it has prebiotics and probiotics but is starch-free across all stages. HiPP UK: Typically comes in boxes and contains prebiotics only (no probiotics). It is also starch-free. Note: Only the German version uses Metafolin® (a more bioavailable form of folate) in certain stages.
Is HiPP HA (Hypoallergenic) considered "Organic"?
Technically, no. Under EU law, a formula cannot be labeled "Organic" if the milk proteins have been hydrolyzed (broken down). However, HiPP HA is made with the same organic-quality base ingredients and rigorous safety standards as their certified organic lines. It is designed specifically for babies at risk of allergies or with sensitive digestion, using extensively hydrolyzed proteins that are easier to process.
What is Metafolin® and why is it in HiPP German formulas?
Metafolin® is a premium, patented form of folate (L−methylfolate) found in HiPP German formulas. Unlike synthetic folic acid, which the body must convert before use, Metafolin® is the "active" form already found in human breast milk. This ensures that every baby can absorb and utilize this essential B-vitamin immediately, regardless of their specific genetic ability to convert folic acid.
Why does HiPP Anti-Reflux use Locust Bean Gum?
HiPP Anti-Reflux (AR) is specially formulated with Locust Bean Gum (also known as Carob Bean Gum). This natural thickener makes the formula creamier in the bottle and helps it stay down in the stomach. By increasing the viscosity of the milk, it significantly reduces "spit-up" and gastroesophageal reflux, providing a gentle, organic-based alternative to heavy rice-starch thickeners used in domestic AR brands.
Does HiPP formula meet US and Canadian iron requirements?
European formulas, including HiPP, typically contain slightly lower iron levels than the "one-size-fits-all" high-iron mandate in the US. However, HiPP stages their formulas (Stage 1, 2, 3) to increase iron content as a baby’s natural stores deplete around 6 months. Most pediatricians find these levels appropriate for healthy infants, but we always recommend consulting your doctor to ensure the specific stage matches your baby’s iron needs.
